Bike needs a total one over with fluids. I'm doing a bit at a time.
1988 BMW R100RS. The Airhead has proven itself. A solid runner with 93K added to her in the last 4 years. Stripped down to the essentials, she's a far cry from her pearl white factory debut.
I pulled her into Dave's backyard, tucked away, had a smoke and contemplated my advances and one
particular item stood out.
Current oil filter was pushing 12K miles. I've been running filters every 6-8K and I totally forgot to pop an new one in, on the last oil change and oil switch swap, behind a plaza with an auto-store that dumped the dumpster dived gatorade bottles filled with oil in Logan, Utah.
I checked the valves last night and tightened up what probably could have remained untouched. Bike stays in check. It's to the point I check the lash every other oil change and she never tightens up.
The recently added crash bars only need to be loosened at the U-bolts to gain just enough space to pull the covers off, a huge plus.
12K filter was in great shape with nothing to call any attention in it's guts.
Next shall be the sump dump. Approximately, she burns just under a quart of motor oil every 1K.
Rear end and tranny need fresh lube and I may switch out the fork oil. Wonder if Dave has any ATF?
